TabSafe Medical Services, Inc. has spent eight years and over $12MM designing, field-testing, patenting, and now perfecting a best-of-breed system for personal medication management. There are many issues that contribute to poor personal management of medications. TabSafe Medical Services, Inc. is focused on the most fundamental, people not taking their medications as they are prescribed, termed non-adherence or suboptimal medication use. About half of the 1.8 billion prescriptions dispensed annually in the U.S. are not taken as they are prescribed. Almost 30% of patients stopped taking a medicine before the supply ran out. The cost of this problem is huge whether measured in lives or dollars. By itself, in the U.S., not taking medications correctly results in 125,000 unnecessary deaths and 1,000,000 hospitalizations (one in ten of all hospitalizations). The New England Healthcare Institute recently estimated $290BB is spent annually on poor medication adherence. The trends indicate the current shortages of geriatricians and caregivers will only worsen significantly as the world’s population ages. Intel wisely conducted ten years of research in seven European countries to understand the special needs of older adults as they age and attempted to answer the following question: How can we increase the quality of life for a global population that will double in size by 2050, while reducing the cost of medical care through innovative technologies?”
TabSafe was founded to develop a simple, innovative technology-based solution to assist with personal medication management and to combat the problem of non-adherence, a very complex problem. TabSafe uses patented and proven technologies to improve medication adherence and the overall wellness of the Company’s customers. Specifically, TabSafe stores medications releasing them for the user according to a prescribed schedule. The system also uniquely accommodates medications prescribed on an “as needed” basis and, therefore, can be used in managing pain medications or other medicines that shouldn’t be taken too frequently. This proprietary and patented system gives visual and audible reminders for medications, health reminders, and necessary activities to the user and caregiver; alerts the user and caregivers in the event of non-compliance; reorders medications; collects vital sign data, e.g. blood pressure or blood sugar, and correlates this data to the intervals between medication doses; creates and stores electronic personal health records; and downloads encrypted data to a website via an analog telephone line making the information stored in the system accessible to families and healthcare providers via the internet. Additionally, the TabSafe system is the only personal medication management system that creates the closed-loop connectivity between user, physician, and pharmacist allowing for real-time adjustments to medication regimens. The company is headquartered in Roswell, Georgia, and the systems are domestically manufactured in Indianapolis, Indiana. The mechanical cartridge system has been proven reliable for people with over ten million medication doses over the last six years.
